Turmeric: The Spice is Right
Wellness Week: February 22–28
Turmeric, a common herb found in curry dishes, is much more than a tasty spice. Recognized as a powerful antioxidant (neutralizes free radicals), anti-inflammatory (reduces swelling), and antimicrobial (germ fighter) turmeric is a powerful ally. Because of these amazing properties turmeric may be beneficial for several conditions including: heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, depression, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Much of the power in turmeric’s punch comes from curcumin, a component of turmeric that also gives it its vibrant yellow color. Try adding turmeric powder to your morning smoothie, or steeping turmeric tea. If you don’t care for the strong taste of this spice, a selection of turmeric/curcumin supplements are available in our Wellness Department.
