Seeds for Success
Summer gardening camp with PFC and Grow La Crosse!
Thanks to the generous support of the Robert and Eleanor Franke Charitable Foundation, the People’s Food Co-op and the local nonprofit Grow La Crosse have partnered to launch a Seeds for Success Camp this summer. During this camp, youth from the Boys and Girls Club spent a week at the PFC—La Crosse and Deep Roots Community Farm gardening, eating healthy food, and cooking up a storm.
The goal of Seeds for Success is to get kids excited about preparing simple, healthy meals focused on local, fresh produce. We began and ended each day at the co-op, cooking breakfast and preparing lunch, and then spent time in the middle of the day at the farm, harvesting produce to cook with, working in the gardens, caring for the farm animals, and relaxing at the creek when the work of the day was done.
A highlight of the week was preparing dinner to share with all the kids’ families back at the Boys and Girls Club. We made shepherd’s pie, fresh cucumber salad, and blackberry cobbler. Throughout the week, the children were such hard workers in the kitchen, so enthusiastic for whatever we brought to them, so brave to try new things in the garden and kitchen, and overall such a great group of kids. This camp has truly been a pleasure and one we hope to replicate in future years!
